Back up with WORD
Students - one or two blogs have become 'corrupted' and have turned to code. We are therefore recommending that you keep a copy of your blogs on word documents.
Please don't worry too much about this - it has only happened a couple of times. However - do begin to keep a back up - just in case. your blog will be 40% of your coursework grade so it is in your interests to keep a back up!
thanks - Mary, Rebecca, Bernard, Dan, Donna, Annabel, Tony, Andrew, Ana, Justin, Micky, Marisa

Pitch & Planning - over half term
Over the half term you should be forming your ideas for your actual Thriller Film Title Sequence opening, as when you return to college you will have to present your PITCH. So you need to be sketching initial ideas for storyboards, compiling a list of titles, looking for locations and taking photos. When you return you can firm up your ideas with the rest of your group (that's if you don't manage to meet over the holiday).
Good luck with your planning!

Good luck with your planning!

Storyboarding
Storyboarding is a really important aspect of your planning and you will be awarded MARKS FOR GOOD STORYBOARDING. You should take a lot of time thinking about the type of shots you need to use, where the titles will come in and the sequencing of your shots. Don't worry if you can't draw - as long as the gist is conveyed that's fine! One word of advice - FILL THE FRAME - don't draw tiny objects in the square. If the shot is a close up - draw a close up!
Good Luck

Do you have a Media Card?
A few people still have not paid their £5 media charge. Your Media card lets you book out equipment such as cameras, use the colour printer in the media room and it gets you entry into the cinema to see you film on the big screen. Please bring your £5 to your teacher NOW: no card =no equipment!

Skills audit: filming and editing preliminary match cut excercise
For our Preliminary match cut exercise we had to create a short film of someone going to someone and having a short conversation. The requirements of our film was a match-cut, shot reverse shot and the cameras had to obey the 180 degree rule.
The name of our film was ‘starr nine. We didn’t think too much into the story line but we decided to have a basic one just so our film had a bit of narrative. A girl was running into a building to meet some onto to give them something precious. Whilst filming we came across difficulties, because we were filming Jasmin running up the stairs through the window but there was a reflection of the camera crew. So we had to change the angle and the high to the camera so it minimised the reflection. We took several shots of jasmine running up the stairs so we were a bit to create good match cuts. We filmed jasmine running up the stairs from the front, from behind and her shoes. We wanted a variety of shots. One of the match cuts we used in our film was Jasmin running up the stairs through the window then her running up from behind then a clip of her running up from the front. We were still new at using the software so editing it to make a slick match-cut was difficult for us. The timing on the match-cut was not good and it speed up during it so you could tell another clip was being used. We used the razor tool to help us do our match cuts, and to cut out certain parts of the clips we didn’t want.
We found it quite hard for us to make our film flow , so we had to cut quite a lot of bits out to improve this problem this made our film a lot shorter than we originally planned. Our shot reverse shot involved close-ups of the two characters in the film. We had close ups of their faces as they exchanged dialogues and gestures we cut from one character to the other, we done this whilst obeying the 180 degree rule. When filming we realised the camera didn’t have a ‘Boom’ attached to it so the sound quality wouldn’t of been great, so we had minimal dialogue in our film ‘You got the stuff’.
We also added sound and titles on this film. We used Live type to create the titles. We had a plain black background with white thin writing with a faint white shadow. This title created an eerie mysterious effect and I think this worked well for our film. The sound was basic, we created it on soundtrack pro. The sound we composed repeated for the first half of the film we had the sound effect of a shot gun when the titles appeared I think this shocked the audience and kept them alert.
Overall I think the filming and editing of this film went reasonably well considering we have not had a lot of practice with the software. If we was to do it again I think we should of filmed a larger variety of shots and we should of added more titles.

List of sub thriller genres
The following are thriller sub genres that I have looked at:
- Action Thriller
- Conspiracy Thriller
- Crime Thriller
- Disaster Thriller
- Erotic Thriller
- Legal Thrillers
- Medical Thriller
- Psychological Thriller - this genre is one of my favourite genres, second to Action thrillers. The most recent psychological thriller i have watch is the film 'Shutter island' starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film is highly rated for its distractions within the film to totally mislead the audience from the truth/expections if the film. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio as a FBI agent who visits a psychiatric hospital on an island alond side his collegue to investigate the case of a missing woman. In the end Leonardo DiCaprio was infact a patient at the Psychiatric hospital and the missing woman was his wife whom he killed. his collegue was also a doctor on an island monitering his mental illness.
- Supernatural Thrillers
- Action Thriller - This is my favourite thriller genre, lastest film i have watched of this genre that i remember properly is 'Taken' starring Liam Neeson as a former agent going on a suspence quest to find his daughter who was kidnapped whilst on holiday with her friend by Arabian thugs to use them for sex-trading in france. Me and my group liked this film alot and may create our own version to it as our Thriller opeining.

I was really pleased with the feed back, they got it spot on with the description. They called it exciting and a chick flick opening this is what we were aiming for and everyone understood what the plot was about.
It looked like we got all our objectives ticked off, they got the right age and audience which it was aimed at which is 16 - 24 . however they did say it was to fast.

Location Shots
We have chosen a few locations for our filming. Our first location will be the Docklands, London. As we felt that the water and buildings surrounding the Docklands gave a sophisitcated and city feeling.

We then filmed at Dunlace Road, Hackney. As the escort went to meet the male at his house.

Intro to Camera & Health and Safety Tutorial
Intro to Camera & Health and Safety Tutorial:
In this tutorial we was introduce to the camera before we could start filming or sequences. We was giving a tutorial on how to use the follow equipment
This is a great tool because it allows you to keep your camera still. It can be extended or shortened in length
This is the most important tool because without it you wouldn't be able to film. We was introduce how to put in the battery into the back of the camera, how to turn it on, zoom, focus, record and how to watch the footages you've recorded.
The memory card goes into the side of the camera either in slot A or B but before this we got to make sure its unlock because the footage will not record if its locked. When you are finish filming you go into the editing room where you just put the memory card into the reader so you can have access to it on the computers.
finally this is what we store all our footages on including the work we have done on final cut pro, soundtrack and livetype.
Health and safety terms and conditions
- Use umbrella to keep camera dry if it is raining
- Always close the lens when finish filming
- Nevertouch the lens
Tutorial lesson on editing
Tutorial lesson on editing:
In this tutorial I learnt a lot of different techniques on editing a footage on final cut pro. After you've watched a footage you can choose to shorten or lengthening your footage by putting an input and an output anywhere you see fit then you drag it down to the time line. This software also includes many effects and transitions for example fades, dissolves, wipes and many more. I additionally learnt I could place music or sound effects on to the time line to give my film a specific feel whether its sad happy or tense.
skills audit
Skills Audit : Livetype & Soundtrack
Brief:We had to film a short sequence mimicking the briefcase swap in collateral. Which we used Final cut pro to do the editing process. When we are happy that the editing is completed we export the footage to either Livetype or Soundtrack.

Livetype:
This allows you to add text, objects, template and effects, for example dissolving, fades, glows and many more on to your footage to give it a professional look.
Soundtrack
This enables you to add or layover natural sounds like footsteps, clapping and screaming. You can also add sound effects either to make your film comical or to build tension. Additionally you could even create an original soundtrack to make the footage more interesting.

Planning Preliminary Match Cut Exercise Including Storyboard
For this exercise we were given a synopsis of the opening to a film and then had to predict the shots that would be used.
The synopsis was:
"East London. 3pm. A man chain-smokes as he sits at his home PC. He copies confidential computer files and plans to a CD. He packages them and is seen posting them."
We were then given a sheet which had a grid with 20 rows. The instruction we were given was to fill the grid with our predictions of what shot types were used, where they were used and what happened in each shot. Following this we watched the clip and compared our predictions to what actually happened. About half of my predictions were right such as; a close up on the subjects mouth when he was inhaling the cigarette. These shots made us start to give some thought of the kind of shots we could use in our openings, what looks effective and keeps the audience interested.
We were next asked to create a storyboard to show what we had learnt in class. In this scene we were told to include to show how well we had understood the 180 degree rule, a match cut and a shot reverse shot.
The synopsis we were given for this scene was:
"a character opens a door, walks into a room, sits opposite another character and they share a few lines of dialogue"
For our scene we decided to shoot the subject's feet walking towards the camera, concealing their face to create suspension in the audience. The match cut would be of the door as it was opended by a hand on wone sidd of the door and opended on the subjects face in the next shot and our shot reverse show would be the two subjects conversation.

Our meeting - Friday 19th February 2010
On the 19th of February 2010 My group met up to begin preperations for our film. We drafted our intial ideas and then came up with our final idea of which we all agreed. It took us quite a while to think of how to craft each stage of our story together as we wanted our story to be edgey and unpredictable, we also wanted it to be unique i.e not ressembling any other typical thriller films. It was quite difficult to work out where to place particular scenes as we wanted the film to make sense and in order to this the scenes needed to mesh together neatly.
Following the meeting we took pictures of the locations we intended on using so that everybody became familiar with the surroundings and to see if we all deamed the area to be suitable.

Blade 2 title sequence

The style of the titles/credits on the images themselves are standing out in a sharp capital font text which are in a bright red on a black background to start with but then as Blade starts to move the credits blend in with the background that they were on. As Blade is making what seems to be silver bullets another set of credits fade in from the left of the screen which are also a bright red which still stands out on the colors of Blades Jacket and Equipment, as props such as walls and chains pass through the sight of the camera the bright red text fades out to the left as the wall passes through.
As this is the second of the trilogy the images which are presented are of what had happened before in the 1st movie and how he is making his equipment he uses.
The titles say NEW LINE CINEMA PRESENTS, AN AMEN RA FILMS PRODUCTION, IN ASSOCIATION WITH IMAGINARY FORCES and at the end of the title sequence a big icon and big letters saying BLADE II comes from the top of the screens where the knife looking font comes flying in.
What appeals to me about this title sequence is that i have seen the first movie and
know the story so far, so i picked this film because i loved the first film and have watched number 2 and the 3rd movie and the images in this title sequence bring back memories when i watched the first movie.
Sherlock Holmes End Credits

Sherlock Holmes End Credits
The style of this films end credits is unique and gives a real sense to what time and era the film is set in. The credits appear in a hand written font as if written with an aged quilt pen. Short clips of the film appear in the ending scene, they then turn into a freeze frame and the contents of the freeze frame are put onto brown paper with the characters and background having the effect of being sketched onto the paper with some sort of scratch pen. This style fits in great with the film, as the story line of Sherlock Holmes

How is suspence created in one scene of Marathon Man?
The camera zooms in towards the tall, overpowering , concrete pillars. These make Doc look vunerable and belittled as he walks into the shot suggesting to the audience that he is alien to his surroundings. The dark lighting has connotations of horror and immediately creates a foreboding atmosphere for the audience. His body language implies he is paranoid we gather this from his clasped hands and constant fidgeting this puts the audience on edge as the focus is on this character. The non diagetic music over the shot is dark, orchestral music adding to the tension and suspense of the scene. At the very end of this shot before it is cut the camera looks directly up at Doc, along with his now seemingly confident body language this is the point in the scene where Doc looks powerful. However this shot cuts and the music cuts out at which point their is a diagetic loud noise that makes him jump and lose all power. A point of view shot shows the audience a shadow in the distance meaning we cannot establish who it is. This shot emphasizes suspense as it puts the audience in Doc's shoes as a threatened individual.
List of thriller sub-genres-which inspires you at the moment and why?
Thriller sub-genres.
- Action
- Psychological
- Political
- Supernatural
- Sci-fi
- Spy
The type of thriller that inspires me the most is psychological thrillers as they often require deep thinking and in order to suss the plot you often have to look beneath the surface. Additionally they tend tend to have interesting twists at the ending of the film that are usually not of the initial expectations of the viewer. Moreover I find that psychological thrillers are generally maintaining suspense.

Calm.....
I thougth that this image was a good example to show calm as its an image of clouds with very soft mixtures of white and blue. it indicates escapism as its the top of the world, like an empty place with no rules to be followed. it denotes calm, freedom, escapism and softness. as its light coloured.
HaPpYnEsS
This is an image of two girls who jump around freelylike little children as if they dont care about anything and have no problems, living a life full of happyness. They have a big smile in their faces which shows that they are happy and enjoying what ever their doing.

What is a thriller?
A suspenseful adventure movie. Thriller is a British television series, originally broadcast in the UK from 1973 to 1976. It is an anthology series: each episode has a self-contained story and its own cast. Thrillers are characterized by fast pacing, frequent action, and resourceful heroes who must thwart the plans of more powerful and better equipped villains. Examples of thriller films are Godfather, Psycho, Fight club, The dark night etc.
Photo 'Word' activity
The above is what we carried out in lesson regarding photos that express many features such as electrify, quick and many more, so we would have to pick four topics and somehow express this theme with a picture so this is why I will explain the following.

We as group decided the topic mysteriouse was a great choice due to it being related to thrillers also the effect of the fog occured with nature because we didnt edit or add anything to improve the picture, however we took the picture from the 4th floor of the college building this gave as a great view (Birds eye view) and we just waited patiently for someone mysteriouse walked pass and it was great effect that he was walking pass these barriers therefore this could connote that the person was going to commit some sort of mischieve and had some air of danger around. Lastly the attire he was dress all in black therefore adding to scene.

Suspense: Tobi
Photo Activity
In this lesson my group took pictures of Hang, depression, Claustrophobic and confusion.
Hang: Here we was showing a girl hanging her self with her scarf. this is creating suspense because you can't see her face so you can't see her expression of if she is dead or alive. we chose to create the image this way because we feel like this interpreted the word "hang".

Clip from Justins Lesson Suspense Collateral

COLLATERAL
In this first couple of minutes in the film suspense was built up in a very short amount of time. for example we get a shot of Tom Cruise walking in slow motion while everyone else in faded out of lense. Then we get a shot of Jason Statham power walking like he means business towards Tom Cruise as Tom everybody around him is also faded out. As Tom and Jason get closer to each other the foot steps of Tom almost get louder. Out of nowhere we see Jason and Tom bump in to eachother which elevates the suspense in this part of the opening scene. as they finish staring eachother down we get a shot of there feet which we see two breifcases being placed on the floor one which was dropped and another which was set there. We then get a close up of both of there faces as Tom asks Jason if hes ok we here that he has got a American accent then as soon as Jason speaks we straight away can tell that these to men have got differnet lifestyles due to Jasons Cockney accent. As the two men walk away from each other the music starts to come in and builds up the tension as Tom walks away.
